For the Church in Transition
Leadership transitions are refreshing and renewing times. Be encouraged as you see God at work in your ministry. He is doing something new with you as His people.
Here are some issues and suggestions given as guidance to church leadership teams seeking to fill the pastoral or staff positions. One thing to remember - you are in transition. There are several factors to take into consideration to make this a healthy and vital growing time. Hopefully these suggestions will help you as a roadmap and spiritual guide.
Making the most of the transition:
When it is publicly announced that there is a vacancy in the ministry leadership team be aware of the social/community ramifications. Listen to people. The church community may experience loss, confusion, conflict, and concern. It can be a growing time. It can be a revitalizing time. God can bring reconciliation, restoration, and renewal through the spiritual dynamic of this transition.
Understand Leadership
Leadership utilizes various God-given resources and specific leadership behaviors, to influence the thoughts and activities of followers toward accomplishment of aims usually mutually beneficial to a group of God’s people towards His purposes for the group” (J. Robert Clinton, The Making of a Leader, 213).
Understand the Church Community
Church is a community. Church is people who communicate in a certain dynamic relationship. A church is a particular community where God works. Be sensitive to community dynamics
Understand God’s Movement
Transitions are great times for renewal. Prayerfully search the mind of God. Start prayer groups. Open new channels of prayerful communion. Renew faith in God. Trust the living Lord to renew His church. Jesus said, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me (John 15:4).”
Length of the transition:
It is recognized that a pastoral search may extend from 6 to 18 months. Many factors affect the length:
- Is this position staff, board, or congregationally called?
- The length of the previous pastor or staff person’s tenure.
- Size and denomination of church.
- Time of year (holidays, school for children, etc.).
- Size and organization of the search committee.
- Constitutional guidelines.
Pulpit Supply or Intentional Interim?
Pulpit supply serves the congregation as a pulpit voice during the transition. Intentional interims serve as a church consultant and pastoral leader during transitions. Intentional interims take the congregation through a period of healing, help, and healthy transition toward a re-envisioning of the congregation.
