Journalism

The need in today's world has never been greater for dedicated Christians who know God's Word, the power of the Christ-filled life, and how to express the truth through effective writing.

Mission societies and Christian organizations are calling for writers, editors, photographers, and artists who can write news, features, and fiction; produce brochures, newsletters, newspapers, magazines, and websites; and reach and teach the world in the battle for the mind.

To meet these challenges, Multnomah offers a thirty-three-hour journalism major and a nineteen-hour journalism minor. Courses and laboratory work in writing and editing, the graphic arts, and photography prepare students for rewarding ministries in print and electronic media. Students draft and revise manuscripts, developing and polishing their writing gifts. They master principles of visual design so that, as artist or editor, they will know and produce good graphics. And they practice the discipline of editorial responsibility so they will enter the secular and Christian press ready for work.

The college encourages students to assume staff positions with the nationally award-winning campus publications, The Voice newspaper, and The Ambassador, Multnomah's magazine-style yearbook.

What students are saying about the journalism program

"Multnomah's journalism program has given me opportunities to put my skills into practice while I'm still in college. I feel prepared and competent to enter the field of journalism because of the practical experience I've received in writing, editing, and design. And seeing my writing published while I'm still in college has been exciting and motivating." Suzanne Hadley

"The journalism department at Multnomah is definitely preparing me for the rigors of the field. With every class I take, I gain confidence in applying my writing, editing, and designing skills." Cherie Rainwater

"I think Multnomah's journalism program is an excellent preparation for careers in both secular and Christian journalism. It's awakened in me a passion for writing that I never knew existed." Matt Dyal
