MDIV Chaplaincy Track
Because of its practical, balanced approach to ministry training, Multnomah's Master of Divinity program offers an ideal curriculum of professional preparation for hospital chaplains.
Clinical Pastoral Education
Most hospitals require chaplains to earn a recognized Master of Divinity, receive ordination by a recognized ecclesial body (or its equivalent), and earn four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at a hospital accredited to offer such training. The Association of Professional Chaplains, a nationally recognized professional association, also stipulates these requirements to become a board certified chaplain.
Hospital Programs
Several hospitals in Portland offer fine CPE programs. Multnomah has an especially close working relationship with the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in whose program several M.Div. students have been successfully placed.
