This course orients students to the role of the counselor. Students will consider how the counselor should ethically and effectively empower clients to change. Essential interviewing and counseling skills such as empathy, respect, warmth, confrontation and immediacy will be taught and practiced. Students will learn the role, function and application of supervision by observing one another’s clinical demonstration and taking part in the group supervision process. Finally, this course provides awareness of assessment and intervention strategies with clients who exhibit suicidal ideation and behaviors.
