MA TESOL
What is the MA TESOL program?
Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages degree.
How many credits are required to complete the program?
The program itself is 37 semester hours in length. A traditional full time applicant can finish the program in 3-4 terms. However, an applicant can take classes on a part-time basis therefore, taking a longer period of time. The program has a 13-hour Bible and theology requirement plus a 3-hour language requirement which either of these prerequisites could lengthen the program. It should be noted that although these are prerequisites a person can take these credits during the course of the program.
When can I start this program?
We offer a traditional start date in either the fall or the spring.
Visit the MA in TESOL page for more information and program specifics.

Is Multnomah University's Masters in Counseling an accredited program?
The Masters in Counseling at Multnomah University is fully accredited by the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE). The Masters in Counseling is currently under the guidance of the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists to ensure that we meet educational licensing requirements.
How is Multnomah's degree different than other programs?
The program is offered at night and on the weekends in order to allow students to work full-time for at least the first year of the program. The bulk of the classes are offered one at a time, one night a week, from 6-10 pm. A few weekend elective courses (Friday night and all day Saturday) are offered once a month as well.
In the second year of the program, each student must complete an internship where they practice what they are learning in the "real world." While the internship will probably take some time away from working, we are committed to flexibility with this time in order to help working students find a balance between work and school.
As for the focus of the Masters in Counseling curriculum, our desire is to focus on two distinct goals: merging faith integration and academic quality, and offering practical information from practicing professionals. We want to produce quality, biblically-based counselors that will be able to work in any venue in which God calls them, whether that be secular or church-based.
Can you work in a school with a Masters in Counseling?
The M.A. in Counseling degree prepares you to counsel many different populations, including children, adults, teens, groups, families, and couples, with many different kinds of issues. While you will be trained to counsel children and their families, you will not be considered a School Counselor. A School Counselor is a profession that results from a Masters Degree in School Counseling (which we do not currently offer). The Masters in School Counseling distinct degree is necessary in order to work in the school system with children.
What is the internship program like at Multnomah?
Oregon law requires 700 hours of internship while students are in their masters program. Multnomah will partner with each student to place them in an internship that meets the internship requirements of the state (including, but not limited to, church and para-church organizations, clinics, college counseling centers, etc.). The internship hours are to be accumulated in the second year of the program. If students desire to graduate within the timeframe of their classes, students should complete approximately 11 hours of internship a week. Those who cannot dedicate this much time to internship in the second year may work out an internship plan with their advisor to complete internship hours after they finish their coursework.
What if a student wants to pursue a license in another state?
While this degree meets Oregon licensure requirements, other states may have similar standards that will meet with this degree. The Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists is aware of national standards and works to meet them, if not exceed them. If you will be working outside of Oregon and want to be licensed, discuss the educational requirements in that state with your advisor.

I heard Bible is required for completion of the MAT. Is that true?
Yes, Multnomah’s MAT requires 16 semester credits of Bible in order to complete the program. You may have already taken enough hours during your undergraduate or other graduate work, but if not you will need to take them. We believe strongly that in order to develop a well-rounded biblical worldview of teaching and learning, one must have a foundational knowledge of the Bible.
What if I don’t have 16 semester credits of Bible on my transcript? Can I still be admitted?
Of course. You may complete the 16 semester credits of Bible while you are going through the MAT program, by taking Bible/theology classes at our seminary, through our degree completion program, or through online classes from here or another institution. These credits may be either undergraduate or graduate credits.
How much does it cost?
The cost is $460 per credit hour. Depending on what authorization level(s) a student wants, total program costs vary. Tuition ranges from $16,668 to $20,835 based on which authorization levels you are seeking. (See authorization levels given in Question 2)
