A native of Portland, Dr. Lockwood was educated at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, graduating with an A.B. in political science in 1970. He received his theological training at Dallas Theological Seminary, graduating with the Th.M. in 1976 and with the Ph.D. in 1982. He majored in systematic theology in both graduate programs.

He and his wife, Jani, and have been married since 1972. They are the proud parents of one daughter, Elise, and two cats, Brewster and Bradford.

While studying at Dallas, Dr. Lockwood joined the faculty as instructor in Christian Education (1977-79), concurrently serving as an interim pastor for Lewisville Congregational Church. He joined the Multnomah Bible College faculty in 1979 and became a member of the seminary faculty when Multnomah Biblical Seminary was founded in 1987. In June 1990, he was appointed Dean of the Seminary, directing its efforts in achieving ATS accreditation. In June of 1997, the board of trustees appointed Dr. Lockwood as Multnomah’s fourth president. Despite his many administrative duties, he continues to teach at Multnomah University as a Professor of Theology.

Dr. Lockwood served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Biblical Higher Education (2002-2006), two years as its vice-president and two as its president. Recently, he rejoined the ABHE board for another four year term. He currently serves on the board for the Oregon Alliance of Independent Colleges & Universities and has led or participated on half a dozen accrediting teams for the Association of Theological Schools.

Dan and Jani currently attend Lake Grove Presbyterian Church in Lake Oswego, Oregon. At previous churches, Dr. Lockwood served as deacon of adult education, as an elder, as a part-time pastor of adult education, and as an adult Bible class teacher. He speaks frequently at men’s and family retreats, conferences, and at numerous venues regionally, nationally, and internationally. His book, Unlikely Heroes: Ordinary People with Extraordinary Faith, is a personal and biblical reflection on Hebrews. It was published in 2012.

He enjoys downhill skiing, music (especially piano), and musical theatre (observing, not performing). He is a former alpine climber, a six-time marathoner, and holds a black belt in martial arts. Being particularly is interested in performing magical illusions as a medium to present biblical truth, Dr. Lockwood has performed illusions semi-professionally for nearly forty years.
