Thanks to longtime friend of Multnomah - Ediger Media - Dr. Mitchell's show will be on-air starting February 2, 2009.

Dr. Dan’s Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge

On January 13, 2009, in Convocation Chapel, Dr. Dan spoke from Jesus' last prayer in John 17:20-26. In those verses, Jesus prays specifically for us, and, of all the things our Lord could pray for, our unity is his central emphasis. He prays that we will be one-that we will enjoy visible community with one another on earth in the present and glorious reunion with Jesus in heaven in eternity.

Illustrating Unity
To illustrate this unity, Dr. Dan distributed to each student, faculty, and staff person, a piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

He made 2 suggestions:

  1. First, keep the piece (or pieces) in a place where you will see it every day as a reminder to pray this semester for unity.
  2. Second, prayerfully consider steps you might take this semester to build unity and community-whether it be personal, institutional, ecclesial, national, or global.

The Challenge
Then, when you do something to promote unity, you are invited to participate in the Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge. Simply take your puzzle piece to the Prayer Chapel. There you will find a large picture frame with the outer edge of the puzzle already assembled. On the frame and in the puzzle box are many other loose puzzle pieces.  See if you can fit your piece into another piece of the puzzle. If you can't, just leave it on the frame, or try to connect some of the scores of other loose pieces that are there. You might even drop by from time to time to see if you can help complete the puzzle picture by connecting more of the pieces.

By the end of the semester, let's see how much of the picture we can see in the puzzle that we assemble together. Let's see how much unity we can build on campus.

Fun with Book Ratings

On October 11, 2008, when Dr. Garry Friesen posted a blog entry about his last meeting with his book club Eagle & Child (a group he co-founded and co-led for 23 years), my interest was piqued when he mentioned the 250 books the group had read, many of which they rated and ranked. I asked Dr. Friesen for the complete list of rated books, which I just received over Christmas break.

The Rating "System"

As I scanned over the list, I couldn't help but wonder what "criteria" the members of Eagle & Child used to rate the books... so I asked. This was Dr. Friesen's response:

It was very unscientific. We had a scale of 0=pornography and 11=the Bible. We ranked each book individually by our own personal criteria of what we considered a good book. In general it was: interesting, valuable to me personally, well written and good for learning something.

Makes sense to me. What could be more worthless than pornography? What could even come close to the Bible?

And so, without further ado...

Well-known fact: The NIV Bible translation is celebrating its 30th anniversary
Only slightly less well-known fact: Multnomah University will play a part in the festivities

Even as you read this, a four-person team is touring 90 U.S. cities in a custom RV, inviting people to hand-write a single verse of the Bible. 31,173 verses (and people) later, they will have compiled what Zondervan Bible Publishers is calling "America's NIV," a handwritten Bible which will be reproduced and sold, complete with an index of everyone who participated in the project. The original copy will be donated to the Smithsonian Institute.

Would you like your scrivenery added to the 31, 172 others' featured in America's NIV? What are you waiting for? Grab your pen and come on down...

  • Where: Multnomah University at 8435 Northeast Glisan Street, Portland, Oregon 97220
  • When: Friday, January 30, 2009 from 10am to 4pm
  • How Much: Admission is free

See you there.

Roger PorretWe posted a little bit ago about Roger Porret, our faithful volunteer, when we were writing about tradition. You tend to shape the culture a bit when you have been around as long as he has. We celebrated Roger's 30th anniversary on Thursday. Roger is a volunteer in the cafeteria at MU and has certainly made an impression.

Roger Porret has had an impact at Multnomah since I was a student. I remember a special chapel when Roger was deputized as the "official" sheriff of Multnomah. His position came with a badge and a bunny blaster. He was thrilled and so was the student body. I was and am thankful to be a part of a school that would take the time to honor a special volunteer like Roger!

Article about Roger

We at Multnomah are sure thankful for Roger's spirit and his service. He sets a mighty good example. Here is to thirty years that Roger helped make great. Congratulations!

Still Wondering How To Fulfill Your Student Ministry Requirement?

I just saw this on the news last night: The Australian Government will pay you to live on an island on the Great Barrier Reef...

www.islandreefjob.com

What a place to commune with God and map out amazing ministry opportunities! Is this a new mission field? Have you picked up on the jesting nature of this post yet? (But seriously, if you can pull this off, then our hats are off to you!)

All you have to do is meet the requirements in the Job Description below...and then get Student Ministries to approve it for credit...then convince a dean to turn it into a study abroad program. Ba-da-bing!

Apparently some of the folks associated with the NCCAA thinks that MU has one of the "5 best sports websites" out there.

Read it for yourself

Our Web Developer (LeRoy Lee) and Digital Designer (Amanda May) and Promotions Coordinator (Dave Hardy) have worked very hard with our Athletics department to make this a great site.
