Student-Alumni Blazer Event_groupshotOver 130 Multnomah alumni, students, faculty, and friends witnessed a 106-98 Trailblazer victory over the Los Angeles Lakers during the Alumni-sponsored MU Night on April 10. After the game, all participants had the opportunity to shoot some free throws on the court. Check out the Alumni Photo Journal to view more photos of the evening.

The Alumni Department had reserved 130 tickets a year ago for this game-all of which were snapped up quickly for $25 each, leaving many disappointed. The department will be ordering more tickets for next year's game very soon. Contact the Alumni Department at alumni@multnomah.edu to let them know if you are interested in attending next year, so that they can get an idea of how many more tickets to buy.

Final South Aldrich Hall Flood Update

For full context:

The following information is paraphrased from a Student Services Email to the ProCom department.

***

Our "Southies" moved back into South Aldrich on Thursday, April 9th, 2009. We had a great welcome home BBQ for them provided by STUGO, many of the women from Memorial Hall, men from North Aldrich Hall, staff, faculty, and administration helped the Southies move back in. The rain held off until we had nearly everyone moved in so everyone stayed dry and enjoyed a celebratory experience of moving back into campus housing.

Many of the South Aldrich residents communicated their gratitude to Multnomah for communicating well with them and finding ways to meet their needs throughout this process.

Some Of The Ways Needs Were Met

  • MU employees coming in early from Christmas vacation to handle things.
  • Some MU employees were on-call 24-hrs a day for student needs.
  • Providing Tri-Met passes for all the Southies living in the hotel (run by Eastside Foursquare Church).
  • Having students "Adopt-a-Southie" with the goal of serving their Southie and keeping him connected to campus.
  • Staff and faculty provided meals for all the Southies at their temporary locations.
  • Every displaced Southie was given a generous rooming discount to offset any additional expenses or inconvenience that occurred.
  • All damaged personal items were covered by Multnomah and students were able to get reimbursed the replacement cost for each damaged item.
  • The commuter center reached out to the Southies, inviting them to use their space and attend any events that they had for commuter students in an effort to make sure they stay connected to campus.

Bonds Not Easily Broken

  • A number of students living in the hotel said that they grew closer together during their time at the hotel in a way that may not have happened on campus.
  • The men living in the Pacific Street houses and the Scruggs apartments enjoyed the camaraderie of living in a house or apartment together.
  • Even though they were very excited to move back in to South Aldrich, our students have shown us how they seek to grow and make the best out of a challenging situation.

Thank You!

  • A huge, special thanks goes out to everyone in Campus Support Services for all the hard work they have done throughout this transition process. Without their hard work we would never had been able to make this process flow so smoothly.
  • Thank you to students for being so gracious, mature, and understanding of the situation.
  • Thanks to Promotions & Communications for everything you have done to help us communicate well. I admire your professionalism and dedication to doing a job well. (Editorial note: Ahh Shucks. It's our job - even if it's weird to publish thanks to us ourselves! Full disclosure: In case you haven't figured it out yet, this blog is published by the ProCom department.)
  • Thanks to the Business Office for working out insurance and reimbursements and discounts to students so generously and swiftly.
  • Thanks to everyone in Student Services for going above and beyond to serve these affected students and coordinating every department involved in "recovery" - it is a true testament of the commitment to true service to students.
  • Thank you to Quality Inn and Roadside Hotel for the discounted occupancy rates and service to students living with them during this time. (Editorial note: Parents and guests, be sure to check them out and tell them that MU sent you when you need a place to stay near campus.)

What Now?

Multnomah will leave the flood Webpage, Twitter feed, and Flickr feed up for the rest of 2009 just in case there are more updates to come.

As of right now, the projects are complete and the students could use our prayers for a strong finish to what has been a very unique year!

Take A Walk Around Multnomah’s Campus… Virtually That Is!

vt_screenshotDuring the past few months, some of you may have seen me toting around a tripod and a camera, standing outside buildings, snapping away incessantly. Well, the fruit of my labor has finally come to fruition. The MU Virtual Tour has officially launched on Multnomah's web site: www.multnomah.edu/goto/virtualtour.

Who It's For

The MU Virtual Tour is aimed at prospective students who would like to get better acquainted with Multnomah's campus, guests who may not be familiar with the campus layout, and people interested in booking Multnomah's facilities for events.

What It Took

The project started over a year ago. Numerous hours went into building the Virtual Tour and working the kinks out of it. The Virtual Tour features an interactive map allowing users to navigate to different buildings--many of which display 360 panoramas. For event planners, facility capacities and building layouts are available. Continual improvements will be made to the Virtual Tour as time goes on. For example, new photos will be taken as the spring flowers come in to accentuate the beauty of our campus.

What You Can Do

Check out the MU Virtual Tour, and have fun virtually exploring Multnomah's campus. If you have any comments or suggestions to help make this tool more user-friendly, contact the Promotions Department at procom@multnomah.edu.

Silva Memorial: Press Coverage and a Faculty Eulogy

Silva Memorial ProgramGood Shepherd Community Church was packed for Tony Silva and Laura Dyal-Silva's memorial service yesterday. Powerful tributes were paid to both Tony and Laura, and the Gospel was presented clearly and powerfully.

Press Coverage Update

Faculty Eulogy
In closing I have included a eulogy that was shared at the service by Dr. Karl Kutz.

As students come and go each year, they leave a lasting impact upon my life.  I find myself immensely proud of them as I see their interaction in the classroom, witness their passion for God, and hear what they are learning through the struggles of life.  In the process they touch me just as much as I touch them.  Naturally there are some who, for some reason or another, I get to know more closely - and Laura was one of those people.  Although Laura began taking classes at Multnomah only this last Fall, I had the privilege of getting to know her several years ago.

My first encounters with Laura were second-hand . . . through conversations with Bobby.  Bobby was in many of my classes and as we talked after class about theology or life, inevitably he would mention Laura.  From the way that he spoke of her, the way that he honored, loved, and trusted her, I could tell that she was a remarkable young woman.  Her opinions mattered, their purpose was a shared vision, ... she was truly a cherished companion.

When I finally met Laura I could not help but be warmed by her presence.  No one could; her smile was contagious.  It was always such an encouragement to look out into the classroom and see her smile and attentive eyes. Her comments and questions revealed an inquisitive mind and an eagerness to learn.  She was engaging and focused and I know that in study groups with students she kept everyone on task.   I can attest to her delightful, subtle sense of humor and a love for life that thrived on adventure and the discovery of new things.  But by far what stood out the most to me was how I saw her encourage those around her and reach out in a way that reflected genuine interest, patience, and love.  Ministry was not something that Laura did; it was simply an extension of who she was.

As I think of all the things that Laura could yet have done, the lives that she would yet have touched, her tragic death is such a loss.  But I cannot help but be reminded that on this path of life God does not always lead us along through-streets.  He sometimes guides us through dead ends because the journey is often more important than reaching many of our destinations.  And Laura traveled well.  All of us that encountered her along the way have been enriched by having known her and we will all deeply miss her.

Kigali Library Kollection Update

Context: Original Kigali Bible College - Kollection - Africa New Life Post

Kollection Was So Successful That...logo_0001

The Kigali Committee is now doubling its goal in hopes of collecting different Bible, theology, and Christian books by May 15, 2009 for the largest theological library in Rwanda. After much prayer, the committee decided that the goal should be "Double or Everything," renaming the drive the "Kigali-Kigali Kollection." The committee is praying toward another miracle of receiving a doubled portion of 4,018 books by the set date. If the "Double" goal is met before graduation, then the new goal will be 5,000!

4 Ways To Participate

  1. Book Donator: Each student donates TWO books; each faculty donates FOUR (or more).
  2. Book Kollector: The committee needs 24 collectors who will be the point person at their churches to get book donations.
  3. Book Recorder: The committee needs 25 people to record books for a minimum of 2 hours. Volunteers will be paid $10/hr (Priority goes to those who have already donated hours previously).
  4. Finance Giver: Give $1 at each SWOT chapel; give a one-time offering; or be a Buck-One-Book giver (BOB).

4 Contacts:

  1. To be a Book Donator, contact Amanda Schick at MSC#105
  2. To be a Book Kollector, contact Eric Faris at MSC#869
  3. To be a Book Recorder, contact Chelsea Cantrell at MSC#562
  4. To be a Finance Giver, contact Josh Libby at MSC#358

If you're off-campus, contact Dr. Garry Friesen at gfriesen@multnomah.edu or Debbie Chin at dchin@multnomah.edu or 503.251.6400.

Most Recent Report:

The number of books recorded has now reached 2,223. During the first wave, most books were donated by students and employees on campus - this second wave of books has been largely from the local churches.

With 37 days left until graduation, 1,795 more books are needed to reach the goal!

Laura Silva, a Bible College student at Multnomah University passed away. Below is an exerpt from a letter sent to students on Monday, April 6th:img_4144_21

Laura Silva, as well as her brother-in-law, Tony Silva, died yesterday in a tragic climbing accident in the Gorge. Laura is the wife of Bobby Silva, also a student at Multnomah and an IT employee, and together they lived in married student housing. Bobby suffered no injuries in the accident and is currently at home with his family in Gresham.

Memorial Service

Since Multnomah's Maundy Thursday Chapel is at the same time as the memorial service, Dr. Lockwood has announced that the chapel is cancelled and that all students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend the memorial service in Boring, Oregon instead.

What You Can Do

  • Pray
    • Pray that this circumstance will bring glory to Jesus Christ.
    • Pray for Laura's husband Bobby Silva who is a recent MU alum and current employee in the IT Department.
    • Pray for the wife and two children of Tony Silva.
    • Pray for the families, friends, and coworkers who love them both.
  • Give
    • A memorial fund has been set up to support Bobby during this time called The Laura Dyal-Silva Memorial Fund
    • Send a message to silvamemorialfund@gmail.com to receive an auto-reply with further instructions on how to give.
    • Contact their church, Corem Deo Fellowship for anything else.

Media Stories

We are currently working with The Oregonian on a more detailed story surrounding the Silva's.  It sounds like they want to focus on the Christian faith of Laura and Bobby directly. Much of the focus thus far has been on Tony, Bobby's brother because he was a detective with Gresham Police - but his has been one marked by Jesus as well.

We will follow-up with new information as necessary.

Bobby, we are praying and mourning with you, brother.

Alumni-Sponsored MU Night At Blazer-Laker Game

Are you excited? I don't blame you.

2 Things For Everyone Not Going With The Group

  1. The group will be meeting before-hand at Flying Pie Pizza - go hang out with old friends, newer students, and faculty/staff.
  2. If you're going to be at the game...find the group anyway and hang out...maybe you can sneak onto the court after the game with them (but you didn't hear that from me, and don't tell the Blazer's event staff that I said that!)

Here's The Deal

Here's The Catch

All the tickets sold out in record time!

They've been sold out for at least a week. Yeah, I'm bummed too. Whaddya gonna do? They purchased 130 tickets and they all got snapped up. The Alumni Department reserved them over a year ago. We figure that with the waiting list and amount of calls for tickets this past week that there is a demand for at least 175-225 tickets. I'm pretty sure I heard Michelle Peel say that she's going to reserve at least 200 for next year's Alumni-MU night.

Wanna Complain?

OK, you're right, complaining won't help you get to the game. So, if you'd like to encourage her to buy more, please comment below on this blog or email the Alumni Department directly at alumni@multnomah.edu.

Wear Some Multnomah Gear!

Now, if you were lucky enough to get tickets, then go represent!
