The Multnomah Ambassador Choir and Community Chorale is presenting “Christmas in the City," a free concert at First Baptist Church Saturday, December 7th, at 7 p.m. "We want to help people celebrate the Christmas season," said Stan Campbell, director of the music department. "This is our gift to the city."
Until five years ago, the choir performed its Christmas concerts at Central Bible Church, a one-minute walk from campus. After Campbell kept meeting people who'd never heard of Multnomah, he decided to move the event downtown. "MU is not a bubble campus — it’s a part of Portland," he said. "I knew that having something in the heart of the city would help people."
The event was a hit. "The audience loves it," Campbell said. "It's a tradition for many families now."
The experience benefits the singers too. Campbell loves the educational value the seasonal songs provide. "I can have my students experience a variety of languages, styles and musical periods through Christmas music," he says. "We have fun!"
Even more importantly, the concert gives the choir an opportunity to share the gospel with its audience. "Hearing something beautiful about Christ is soul-stirring; it feeds an emotional need and points people to the Savior," Campbell said. "People are more open to considering these things during Christmas time, especially when they are presented with it through art."
Although Campbell had been directing choirs for years, he's still amazed at what can happen when a group of singing believers join together. "The choir is a lot like the church," he says. "It’s a bunch of average people coming together around a common goal. The result is something that’s beautiful— something that’s greater than the sum of its parts.”
Admission is free. Donations will be accepted to help support the Ambassador Choir Spring 2014 Tour ministry.
