PORTLAND, Ore. — Dr. Daniel Lockwood, former president of Multnomah University, has passed away at age 65.

Lockwood died peacefully in his Portland home July 9. He was surrounded by family when he entered into the arms of Christ.

“We are all thankful for the way Dr. Dan invested his life in others as a dedicated follower of Christ, leader, teacher, encourager and humble servant,” said Dr. Craig Williford, Multnomah’s current president. “Serving others in the name of Christ was his passion and life commitment. He positively impacted our lives in numerous ways. We will miss him.”

Lockwood worked at Multnomah for more than 34 years. He taught theology for 11 years before serving seven years as seminary dean. In 1997, he became Multnomah’s fourth president. Throughout his time at MU, Lockwood continued to teach theology.

Due to health concerns related to cancer, he retired from the presidency November 1, 2013. He spent the past eight months in close connection with his family.

During Lockwood’s 16-year tenure as president, the University constructed seven buildings on its Portland campus, opened a campus in Reno, Nev., and launched a teaching site in Seattle, Wash. Eight graduate and seminary degree programs were created, and nine undergraduate majors were initiated. The Adult Degree Completion Program, which now provides three majors, was born in 2007. Multnomah was granted university status in 2008.

The Multnomah community mourns the loss of a gentle leader and an outstanding teacher. He leaves a legacy of theological integrity and unreserved faith in Christ.

Lockwood is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jani, and their daughter, Elise. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church in Lake Oswego, Ore. All are invited to attend.

UPDATE: Listen to Dr. Dan's memorial service recording.

Multnomah University Appearing in Portlandia Season 3

Remember this casting call for  Portlandia Season 3 filming on campus?

Portlandia TV Show Features Multnomah University Campus

Portlandia filmed a number of sketches for season 3 for two days this past summer and we had a blast. The Portlandia film crew and actors were some of the best people we've ever had the privilege of working with. It was great seeing Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen hanging around the Admissions Offices or sitting in the commuter lounge of the JCA or sweating it out for three hours with Dr. Dan Lockwood in a very hot Mitchell Library because the sound guys needed the AC turned off!

Put A Lion On It!

Want to be an "extra" on the TV show Portlandia? Well, here's your chance to appear in a special filming on Multnomah's campus! You won't get paid, but you'll probably have a great day and laugh a lot...and there's the whole cool TV show thing...And yeah, we know it's weird to do this at a conservative Christian college. (Is that irony? Discuss.)

We're especially interested in MU students and recent alums who can wear MU gear and sign an Appearance Release and a Non-Disclosure Statement...and then...Put a Lion on it!

A Message from the Alumni Director

“How could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” Genesis 39:9

I've been enjoying Dr. Lockwood’s book, Unlikely Heroes—Ordinary People with Extraordinary Faith, a Biblical and Personal Reflection on Hebrews 11. Through my read I’ve appreciated the opportunity of getting to know our president more. His unique blend of academic perspective and devotional application, as he identifies the cast of these Old Testament characters—simple, ordinary, flawed people living out extraordinary faith, has been encouraging. Reflecting the Light of Christ

Reflecting the Light of Christ

Light in a Dark Place

"Have you ever been in a very dark space... [where] you couldn't see anything?"

Multnomah's president Dr. Dan Lockwood began his spring 2012 Convocation Chapel address with a story about a trip to New Zealand with his daughter, Elise. Preparing for a black-water rafting excursion, Dr. Lockwood and Elise donned wetsuits, climbing harnesses, and headlamps. Then they proceeded to climb down a 150-foot shaft to a steep tunnel that led to an underground river where a rubber raft awaited them. After traveling a half mile down the river, their guide told them to turn off the headlamps.
