Cinco de Mustache

By Garry Friesen November 7th, 2009

Family & Friends,

I’ve finally experienced the newest tradition at Multnomah – Cinco de Mustache – not to be confused with Cinco de Mayo.  It started with 17 men seven years ago and had over 77 hairy-lipped men this year.  During October you grow a beard.  Then on the Cinco (5th) of November you shave the best mustache or craziest mustache you can.  Did I mention the “Gentlemen’s Lunch”?  In the dining hall, one long table is formed for the mustached men to (1) Drink milk, (2) Make manly grunts, (3) Sing the “Cinco Song” (4) A speech from someone with a famous mustache, (5) Sing “We are the Champions” (played this year by Seth J. of Aslan’s How).  I’ll never forget Dr. Ray Lubeck’s stirring speech, very short, but potent.  “You have been growing your mustache for 30 days” he said, “But, this mustache is 30 YEARS OLD.”  He said more, but it was drowned out by cheers and clinking of milk mugs.  Afterwards, I remembered that my school identification card had to be renewed.  Why not on Cinco?  The picture is very cinco — mustache and mug of milk on the card remind me of this wonderful Cinco de November.   I know what you are thinking.  What are the words to the famous Cinco song?  If you promise to grow a mustache next Cinco, you are allowed to look below.

The Cinco Song:
Ai, Yai, Ai, Yai, Cinco de Mustache
The men who are hip, they grow hair on their lip,
They don’t use a razor, they don’t give a rip,
It grows and grows and grows, so let your mustache show.

Dr. G, that’s a great picture! I remember the first Cinco de Mustache. I’m glad to hear it has become a tradition for the men at Multnomah. I’m also pleased to NOT hear about any of the crazy things the women of my class tried to start as traditions.
