Lonie Scholarship

By Garry Friesen January 11th, 2010

Family & Friends,

This CLASSIC Friesen Fortnightly was first sent March 1, 2004.  It is a good reminder that we are about to announce the Lonie Scholarship for this semester.

I recently sent out the story of my sister, Lonie, to all Multnomah college students.  It begins, “She immediately struck you as a joyful person.  [She] used her great energy for loving service to her family, church, and community.  At her funeral, one of her best friends, Cuma, said, Because of Lonie’s death, heaven is today even a more wonderful place…and probably better organized.” Our families founded the Lonie (Friesen) Tucker Bible scholarship.  The $78,000 endowment provided $3,500 in scholarships this year. The eight finalists participated in an oral Bible quiz before the whole student body.  Their testimonies were inspiring.  Daniel was a hippie in California living in his van.  He picked up a Bible and read the whole New Testament.  When he finished the gospels, he concluded that Jesus was cool.  When he finished the epistles he concluded that Paul was convicting.  When he finished Revelation, he realized he must decide.  He put his faith in Christ and turned his van into a soup kitchen for the homeless.  Like that convicting Paul said — Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.
