“Scripture in Community”
Family & Friends,
This Saturday looked promising. We had an 8 hour Bible Marathon (Gospels) and students arrived early on a Saturday! This is rare almost flirting with the miraculous. Usually of the 15 who sign up there are 2-4 who do not show up, but we had a full 15 ready to read. It was my 32nd marathon and they do not get old. Man just can’t live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. After two hours of reading we stop and pray responses to the portions which God brought home to us. The prayer times were rich and motivated me all over again to “let the word of God dwell richly” within me. I tend to be a people pleaser and this reading reminded me again how Jesus pleased His Father and let the chips fall where they would. He hated the “leaven” of the Pharisees which was not only false legalistic teaching, but hypocrisy. Many leaders believed in Him, but kept it secret so they would not be kicked out of the synagogue. Then John adds the chilling commentary “For they loved the approval of men more than the approval of God. (John 12:43).” A friend recommended changing the name of Bible Marathons to “Scripture in Community”. I now use both titles since something dynamic happens when people who believe God take in His words together.

We read Scripture aloud together every week at our house church (Nathan was inspired to do this after participating in one of your Bible marathons!) . I completely agree that there is something powerful in experiencing God’s word out loud and together. Yes, I can and do read the Bible on my own, but I really look forward to reading with my brothers and sisters each week. We’ve read most of the New Testament books and a decent chunk of the Old Testament so far, in about a year and a half. We just finished reading Isaiah together — breathtaking!
Thanks, Dr. G, for the inspiration
