Luke-aholics for Rwanda

By Garry Friesen January 30th, 2010

Family & Friends,

Our Rwanda team has been selected from the students who applied.  We are called the Multnomah Kigali Konvey team and we are turning into Luke-aholics.  We have decided that we will all read Luke three times before leaving and memorize five verses from it.  Then as we read we will each select two passages from Luke that we will be responsible for teaching to children and youth.  There is something revolutionary and freeing by confining yourself to one book.  Poets often find freedom by selecting a detailed structured form of poetry. I’m selecting my verses to memorize and maybe I’m getting older.  One of my first choices was the words of old Simeon who was told by God that he would not die before he saw the Lord’s Messiah.  When Mary & Joseph brought in the baby Jesus, Simeon took Him into his arms and must have looked up when he said, “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, now let your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation which you prepared in the sight of all peoples.”  Simeon is gone, but we are not and we plan on telling Rwanda what Simeon saw.
