Autumn is in full swing here in the Pacific Northwest! Signs of fall are evident everywhere—the freshness in the crisp cool air, the smell of fires, warm and vibrantly colored leaves beginning to fall and cover the ground. It’s that time of year again when thoughts are naturally turned towards feelings of nostalgia, holiday memories and family traditions. A few weeks ago I had the privilege of attending a memorial service for a young man who, at the age of 26, lost his life I am told, while attempting to save another. Serving as a camp counselor in north central Oregon, Brett McLean (son of Scott and Christie Huggins McLean, Dip ’73 ex.) jumped in to a turbulent waterfall to rescue a camper who had slipped and fallen in. Sadly both lives were lost.

I've been enjoying Dr. Lockwood’s book, Unlikely Heroes—Ordinary People with Extraordinary Faith, a Biblical and Personal Reflection on Hebrews 11. Through my read I’ve appreciated the opportunity of getting to know our president more. His unique blend of academic perspective and devotional application, as he identifies the cast of these Old Testament characters—simple, ordinary, flawed people living out extraordinary faith, has been encouraging. This past month, we commemorated Multnomah’s 75th anniversary with a special Homecoming Week celebration. Traveling from California, Colorado, Canada, and even some as far away as Uganda, hundreds of alumni returned home in celebration of this significant milestone in Multnomah’s history.
