20 Three's Made Leads MU

MU-113 NWIC-104 win

Portland, Oregon- December 2, 2011 - The Multnomah University Lions started the game out on fire as Tyler Yates connected on four straight three pointers from deep to get MU rolling early. The Lions hit 12 three pointers in the first half to score 57 points. You would think that would create a nice halftime lead - Wrong. The Lions found a way to not get back on defense and allow 57 points to be scored by Northwest Indian College for a tie halftime score.

In the second half, Gian Cook got things going early by scoring three straight buckets, but the game stayed close the entire second half as there were 9 lead changes and 4 tie scores. With just over 12 minutes to go, freshman Matt Johnson sparked the Lions with a three pointer and a put back to five MU the lead.

Sophomore Erik Mendoza was the real story of the second half. Mendoza came off the bench to score a career high 22 points and grab 9 rebounds in the win. Mendoza went 5 for 9 from behind the arc and Tyler Yates went 7 for 10.

The Lions created 23 turnovers, but as usual, got out rebounded by 5. MU was 20 for 48 from the three point line.

This was the second game playing without leading scorere Austin Hodges who is out 6 weeks with a broken hand. Hodges scored 41 points in the previous win with a score of 96-85 at NWIC. Kevin Coverson led the Lions with 9 assists and Steve Bustrin added 8 assists with only 1 turnover.

The Lions are now 6-6 on the year and will host Reed College at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. MU beat Reed earlier this year by a score of 93-67. Due to a schedule change, the Lions will play in a rare double header as they host the Australian Adelaide Rockets at 7:00 p.m.
