Multnomah Bible College Will Adopt a New Athletics Mascot

2/15/2006

Multnomah Bible College plans to adopt a new mascot for the athletics program. In celebration of the school's 70th anniversary, students, alumni, faculty, and staff are currently submitting ideas in a contest to determine the new mascot. The contest will end on March 15, public voting will begin on March 23 and end on April 23. Finally, the new mascot will be announced on May 12, 2006.

"It is important to understand that this is a contest to select a mascot, not to replace a mascot," said Athletic Director Lois Vos. "The 'Ambassadors' nickname and biblical metaphor is not a mascot. Multnomah has never had a sports mascot or logo as such, although some have at times thought of 'Ambassadors' as a mascot."

A true mascot for the Athletics department will provide the opportunity for Multnomah's sports teams to wear logos on their uniforms and have a mascot present at games. Multnomah will retain the institutional metaphor "Ambassadors," along with all of its history and biblical application for those associated with Multnomah. Programs such as the Ambassador Yearbook and the Ambassador Choir will still retain the Ambassador title.

The campaign for a new mascot began with research conducted by the athletic department and a contest for all Multnomah students, alumni, faculty, and staff. After several months of contest submissions ending on March 15th, the Athletic Department and the Academic Dean's Council will judge the results. The top 3 to 5 submissions will then be presented to all of the Multnomah community for a vote on March 23-April 23. The top choice will be announced on May 12, 2006.

The Athletics Department hopes to cultivate greater team spirit and support of Multnomah's athletes, while fostering a greater sense of community and unity in the student body and amongst alumni with the naming of a mascot. Vos ads, "As our sports programs continue to play key roles in leadership and spiritual development of our athletes and student supporters, we believe that the adoption of a mascot will prove a valuable encouragement to all."
