Multnomah will partner with 10 Oregon colleges and
universities in a day of community service to honor Martin Luther King Jr. More than 1,000 students are expected to participate in the event on January 18.
The Event
Concordia University will host the opening rally, which will
include a performance from King Elementary School Choir, a keynote address from
Pastor Mark Strong of the Life Change Christian Center, and a recitation of the
words of Dr. King.
The Work
Students will travel to more than 15 project sites across
Portland. Hands On Greater Portland and the United Way of the
Columbia-Willamette helped plan a variety of projects including refurbishing
schools, churches, and community centers.
The Colleges
Multnomah regularly holds campus-wide community service
events - Days of Outreach - each semester. For this special service event,
Multnomah will collaborate with other schools such as George Fox University,
Linfield College, Portland Community College, Portland State University, Warner
Pacific College, and Reed College. Multnomah's Student Government (STUGO) was involved in organizing
the collaboration.
Quotes
"Being
involved with the MLK serve day has been such a dynamic experience." STUGO
president Sally DuBos said. "From an administrative standpoint, being exposed
to other higher education institutions has already been beneficial through
forming connections and networking opportunities."
"On
a personal level, this project has challenged me to think through Dr. King's
message and how his vision is still very much alive today," DuBos said. "This
is our attempt to honor Dr. King and his message as we participate in carrying
out his dream. Being a part of this experience has given me new appreciation
for diversity and the power of influence one person can have."
