On October 5, Multnomah students and faculty contributed more
than 1,000 hours of community service for the school's biannual Day of
Outreach. Students and faculty helped 36 homes by doing yard work, cleaning
services, and visiting homeowners. Many of these homeowners are widows or
disabled. Students also served at the Portland Rescue Mission, Shepherd's
Door, and Central Bible Church, distributed 50 sandwiches to homeless people in
Portland, sent an Evangelism team to Portland State University, and did road
cleanup on NE 82nd Ave.
Held once a semester, Day of Outreach provides students
with a break from classes and an opportunity to minister in their community. In addition to Day of Outreach, Multnomah's
student-led Community
Response Team (CRT) continues helping the community throughout the year. CRT
performs free yard work and cleaning services to homes in the neighborhood in
need.
Quotes:
"We want to equip students to be servant leaders
and to learn to care for those outside their campus, starting in their
immediate community." Jim Saemenes, Multnomah Director of Student Ministries,
said. "We will share the love of Jesus
Christ with our neighbors by meeting their physical, emotional, and spiritual
needs as we are able."
"As
ambassadors for Christ, our responsibility is to take the gospel we preach and
live it out in practical ways," Andrew Kruse, a Multnomah senior who helped
organize the Day of Outreach, said. "It is amazing how every semester hundreds
of Multnomah students respond to that call when they go and serve elderly
people in their homes, feed the homeless, and evangelize in Portland."
