Master of Arts in Counseling Program Granted Formal Approval in Oregon

Dr. Elizabeth List

On October 14, 2011 the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists granted approval of Multnomah University's Masters of Arts in Counseling (MAC) program.

Multnomah's MAC program has always met the Oregon standards, but sought formal approval of the program several months ago. With this latest achievement, graduates of the program will also be granted their licensure by the State of Oregon rather than having to seek licensure independently. Approval of the program is the result of efforts made by Master of Arts in Counseling Program Director Dr. Elizabeth List and her staff.

Counseling Program Facts

Multnomah University's MAC program combines Multnomah's well-known strengths in biblical training with modern clinical practice skills. Enrollment in the program has been strong since its launch in 2009, with the two most-recent cohorts at full capacity.

Individuals who enter this graduate program do so with a bachelor's degree and a desire to combine proven, scripturally-informed counseling technique with their faith. Individuals not holding a bachelor's degree typically finish their degree in one of Multnomah's traditional undergrad psychology programs or the appropriate Adult Degree Completion program in order to become eligible.

"From the beginning of our Master of Arts in Counseling program, we have worked with the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists to make sure that our graduates would be eligible for state licensure as counselors," Provost Dr. Wayne Strickland said. "I am delighted that the Oregon Board has formally approved our program which will ensure our graduates are able to receive state licensure as counselors in an even more expedient manner."
