Portland, Ore – During its 75th Anniversary Celebration, Multnomah University honored Benjamin Vegors as the 2012 Alumnus of the Year and Jonathan Collins as the 2012 Distinguished Young Alumnus. These awards are given annually and mark the highest honor Multnomah University bestows on Alumni.
After being nominated by their peers recipients are chosen based on meeting two main criteria – their lives should exemplify Christ’s work and should reflect the values of Multnomah’s mission.
A special chapel event was held in their honor on Multnomah's Portland campus at 10 a.m. on February 16, 2012, where Mr. Vegors and Mr. Collins spoke to the student body.
Alumnus of the Year
As a WWII veteran, long-time pastor, and chaplain, Benjamin Vegors’ (’49) unwavering faith has touched many lives. For 40 years, he has served as chaplain at the Veterans Administration Medical Center
in Walla Walla, Washington. Mr. Vegors spends 50 hours a week spiritually counseling veterans. At 89, he is the oldest full-time chaplain in the United States.
Distinguished Young Alumnus
Jon Collins (’03), founder of Epipheo Studios
, is a leader in innovative video marketing. Created in 2009, Epipheo has made more than 400 videos for high-profile clients such as Google, MTV, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft, and non-profits such as Luis Palau Festival and The Justice Conference. Through Epipheo, Mr. Collins strives to communicate truth in a life-changing way and to fashion a business founded on Christ-like values.
Regarding Benjamin Vegors:
“When we consider people for the Alumni awards, we look at those we want our students to admire in their walk with the Lord,” Michelle Peel, Multnomah University Director of Alumni Relations, said. “Ben has a vibrant faith and ministry. Multnomah’s mission is to train and equip men and women to know God’s Word, and that’s Ben’s heart: his pulse is knowing the Word and allowing it to impact his life. In his chaplaincy work, Ben emulates living a life of ministry. I think that is a good picture for our students to emulate and aspire to.”
Regarding Jon Collins:
“Multnomah created the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award to help students see their ministry potential in the near future.” Michelle Peel said. “This year’s recipient, Jon Collins, has a ministry in corporate America. His company, Epipheo Studios, is innovative and well respected in the video marketing field. It’s not your average vocational ministry. I think it’s a way to show students that ministry is wherever the Lord leads them. I think Jon’s example encourages our students to dream big, look at the ways God has gifted them, and ask Him to plant them in ministry.”
