Multnomah University’s Public Safety Department is located in the Campus Support Services Building next to the soccer field. Safety Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You can reach a Safety Officer at anytime by dialing ext. 6499 from any campus phone or by dialing 503.251.6499 from any other phone. We are committed to providing key safety services to the University community with the goal of keeping everyone as safe as possible. All officers are certified as Unarmed Professionals through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training before performing safety and security services.

Campus Crime
The vast majority of crime that occurs on our campus comes from the neighborhood around us. Because we are located in a metropolitan area, we must be aware of the types of crimes that can and do occur in such a setting. As a whole, our campus is very safe and has lower occurrences of crime than our neighborhood. It is very important that each member of the campus community takes an active role in maintaining campus safety and security. Multnomah University’s Public Safety Department maintains a close working relationship with Portland Police and other local law enforcement agencies.
The following precautions should be taken by everyone all the time:
- Leave NOTHING in your car
- Do not leave valuables unattended – this includes backpacks, book bags, computers, etc.
- Report suspicious activity immediately to Public Safety
Clery Act
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is the landmark federal law, originally known as the Campus Security Act, that requires colleges and universities across the United States to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses.
Because the law is tied to participation in federal student financial aid programs it applies to most institutions of higher education both public and private. It is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education. The "Clery Act" is named in memory of 19 year old Lehigh University freshman Jeanne Ann Clery who was raped and murdered while asleep in her residence hall room on April 5, 1986.
Jeanne's parents, Connie and Howard, discovered that students hadn't been told about 38 violent crimes on the Lehigh campus in the three years before her murder. They joined with other campus crime victims and persuaded Congress to enact this law, which was originally known as the "Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990."
