Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

With the continued growth of English as a worldwide language, English language teachers have unprecedented opportunities for service through Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The goal of Multnomah University’s TESOL program is to send out highly competent professionals who are able to work with diverse student populations in the U.S. and abroad.

The M.A. Program

  • 37-semester hours in length
  • on-campus teaching practice through Multnomah’s Community ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program
  • balance of the necessary theoretical and practical foundations for professional language teaching.

What can I do with a TESOL education from Multnomah?

  • Teach English in the U.S. to refugees and immigrants at community colleges and through community-based programs
  • Teach international students at colleges and universities
  • Teach abroad in elementary and secondary educational settings, universities, language schools and multinational corporations.
  • Develop community or church-based language programs in the U.S. or abroad.
  • Pursue a doctoral program in applied linguistics or education

To qualify for this program an applicant must:

  • Have a B.A. or B.S. from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Submit an application with all required forms
  • Complete or have completed 12-semester hours of Bible and theology coursework*

*Bible and theology prerequisites can also be completed during the first year of the MA. TESOL program.
