Master of Theology

Multnomah Biblical Seminary's one-year post-graduate Master of Theology program is designed to equip seminary graduates with specialized academic preparation for professional teaching in a seminary, Bible college, or Christian college. Two major areas of study are offered: Biblical Studies (Old Testament studies and/or New Testament studies) and Theological Studies (biblical, historical and systematic theology).

As with all other degree programs at Multnomah the two major focal points of our educational philosophy are Christ and the Bible. The Lordship of Christ and commitment to God's written word go hand in hand.

The program consists of a minimum of twenty-four or twenty-five hours built on top of a Master of Divinity degree or its equivalent. Three of the four Th.M. seminars are required of all students: An Old Testament Exegesis Seminar (Heb 831), a New Testament Jesus Studies seminar (GRK 822), an Historical Theology Seminar (HTh 806) and an Issues in Theology Seminar (Th 801). The Issues in Theology seminar is required of all Th.M. students. Sixteen hours are devoted to the major studies area, including the appropriate seminars and the required thesis (Th 850). A course in educational philosophy and practice as well as a teaching fellowship internship are included in the program.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM:

  1. To facilitate competency in research skills in biblical and theological studies.
  2. To enable the student to incorporate the use of the biblical languages in advanced biblical and theological research.
  3. To enable the student to demonstrate awareness of discipline-specific primary source literature and skill in its use.
  4. To foster the student's awareness of both current and traditional substantive theological issues, awareness of theological heritage and ability to harness biblical and theological perspectives toward cultural engagement.
  5. To assist the student in developing an increasing love for Jesus Christ through affirmative engagement with his Word in a context of Christian community.
  6. To facilitate the development of the student's commitment to, and ability to carry out, sound pedagogical theory and practice for teaching in a variety of educational settings including the college level.
