Why Major In History?

Do you enjoy browsing bookstores, exploring libraries, learning a second language, preparing family genealogy, planning travel, reading biographies, using maps, and visiting museums? If so, you should seriously consider majoring in history. The Multnomah University history major is designed for students who desire and in-depth perspective on the movements that brought about Western Civilization and deeper appreciation of their intellectual heritage. In contrast to other programs, history employs the liberal arts for understanding and evaluating the complex relationship between Christianity and culture. Courses in European and American history emphasize critical reading, discussion, and analysis of differing interpretations. As a result the major provides preparation for further graduate studies in the humanities, social sciences, and history.

What can you do with an undergraduate major in history?

Among the jobs and career paths you can consider are: archivist, archaeologist, campaign worker, congressional aide, diplomat, editor, foreign-service officer, historic site curator, indexer, journalist, lawyer, legal assistant, librarian, minister, missionary, museum curator, personnel manager, public relations staffer, researcher, teacher, tour guide, translator, writer, etc. The list is nearly endless.

Are study abroad program opportunities available?

Several study abroad opportunities are available to Multnomah history undergraduates. Among these are the Multnomah University history department short term spring semester study abroad programs in Paris and London. In addition, study abroad programs are available to Multnomah history majors through the CCCU summer term abroad programs and the Jerusalem University College semester abroad program. YES!
