Always send your resume with a cover letter. Writing a cover letter provides an opportunity for you to highlight your strengths and supply extra information that may be overlooked on your resume. You can draw attention to those assets that make you right for the job. A cover letter also allows you to express your interest in the organization, church, or company, showing that you have done your research and align well with the employer. You have a chance to explain why you want to work for the particular employer. And lastly, you are given the opportunity to request an interview for the position.

Paragraph 1/Introduction: State the position that you are applying for, where or how you found out about the job, and a brief statement about your interest. (3-4 sentences)
Paragraphs 2+/Argument: This is your opportunity to provide information that doesn't appear on your resume, such as: personal qualities you have that you know they are looking for, specific examples demonstrating your strengths or accomplishments in previous experiences, and why you want to work for the employer.
This is where you demonstrate that you know something about the organization. (This will set you apart from the many other candidates.) Here you can also highlight what is important, but may get lost or overlooked on your resume, such as coursework, special projects, extracurricular activities, or work experience that is particularly relevant to the position you’re applying for.
The purpose is to intrigue their interest so that they will take a closer look at your resume. Between the cover letter and resume you want to assure the employer that you are worth their time and make them curious enough to want to interview you.
Last Paragraph/Closing: State your intention for future contact, whether you will wait for them to contact you or when you will contact them. Also provide your contact phone number and/or email address here. You may even request an interview in this paragraph.
Important to Remember:
- Research the organization/employer so you can articulate why you would be a good match and why you want to work for them.
- Analyze the job description and identify keywords that the employer finds to be essential in hiring.
- Decide on your most relevant experiences and communicate why these make you the strongest candidate for the position.
- Address the letter to a specific person.
- Do not write more than one page; be concise!
- Write a different letter for each position you apply to; do not write form letters.
