Distance Student Borrowing Guide

The Library considers a distance student any Multnomah University student residing outside a 50-mile radius of the Portland metro area. The following services are dependent on staff availability and apply only to distance students when the following resources are needed:

MU books via U.S. Mail

  • The Library will send 5 books at a time via U.S. mail
  • Email complete title and call number to library staff
  • Student will pay for return shipping
  • Check-out time is 3 weeks plus 2 renewals
  • Items will be mailed out within two business days
  • No international mailings

MU book chapters/portions 

  • Amount must be within fair use (usually one chapter or 10%, whichever is less)
  • Email book call number, chapter title, and paging to library staff
  • The portion will be scanned, and you will receive a PDF via email within two business days

Articles and book chapters via Interlibrary Loan 

  • Locate articles in EBSCOhost and use EBSCO’s ILL link under the citation
  • For articles or book chapters discovered outside EBSCO, use the Library’s ILL Form
  • Requests are usually filled in 2-10 days 

Books not available at Multnomah or partner libraries 

  • Please use your local public library interlibrary loan service, or
  • Reciprocal borrowing agreements which allow MU students to check-out books at member libraries. Current MU ID card and a current semester sticker are required
