Portland, Oregon - November 17, 2012 - The Multnomah University Lions played the Simpson University Redhawks on Saturday afternoon on the MU campus in a game featuring the NAIA Redhawks from the Cal Pac Conference vs. the NCCAA Lions from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.
David Walker hit a three pointer off an assist from Erik Mendoza to get things started for the undersized Multnomah Lions on Saturday afternoon. Simpson went down low to their post early and often in the first half, using their size advantage to gain an early 9 point lead. MU fought back behind an array of shots from leading scorer Austin Hodges, as he crossed over his man over and over to get shots off from everywhere in the gym. Hodges nailed shots from deep and from the drive. By halftime, the Lions had cut the lead to 37-40.
David Walker started the second half off the same way by nailing another three pointer to tie the game. After a quick lead, the Lions found themselves down 9 points again to Simpson because of some long three's the Redhawks nailed from downtown. Needing a spark, the Lions turned to sophomore guard Matt Johnson. Johnson responded by nailing a three and taking a strong drive to the hole for 5 quick points to cut the lead to 4.
Down 72-76, Freshman guard Stevie Sansone connected on his fifth 3-pointer of the day to cut the lead to 1. The Lions took the lead on free throws by Austin Hodges at 80-79. With an 82-79 lead and the ball with 46 seconds left, Steve Bustrin faked a hand off to Hodges and took it strong to the hole for a 5 point lead. Simpson came back strong with a basket and a three pointer to tie the game with 19 seconds left. MU did not use a timeout, instead gave the ball to Bustrin to win the game - which is exactly what he did by netting a clutch 3-pointer with 3 seconds left for the victory over the scholarship school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0AKdbNspIQ&list=PL6otQAuHTgm96bJtiJIAm8RYCG3cxRQbB&feature=view_all
