La Grande, Oregon 10/20/2012 - The Multnomah University Lions open their season on the road against the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon. After spotting the Mountaineers a 15 to 0 lead, the Lions woke up and played real solid basketball the rest of the way.
David Walker got the scoring started by hitting a mid-range jumper, and then Senior Austin Hodges took over from there. Hodges scored the next 12 points to get the Lions back in the game. Junior forward Erik Mendoza and freshman guard Stevie Sansone each connected on three pointers to help MU go on a 31-23 run to cut the lead to 38-31 with eight minutes left in the first half. EOU was able to regain control and stretched the lead to 59-41 by half time.
In the second half, the Lions hung in there but the NAIA Nationally ranked Mountaineers size and athletic ability was too much to overcome. EOU shot 50% from behind the arc to eventually pull away with a 109-79 victory.
Austin Hodges led the way in scoring with 34 points. David Walker added 18 points and 7 rebounds. Erik Mendoza added 13 points with 6 rebounds and 6 steals.
