9/25/12 – Multnomah University – Portland, Oregon
It was a roller coaster night for the Multnomah University volleyball team as they played host to the Linfield College Wildcats (JV). The Lions came out of the gates with their best first set performance of the season as they took an 18-5 lead – looking to take only their third first-set victory of the season. Momentum seemed to be on MU’s side, but it did not remain there long as Linfield battled back, closing a 13 point gap to win the set 24-26. The Lions came away with 10 kills in the first set, marking their highest number of kills in any set this season.
The second set found the momentum swung fully back to the Wildcats as they carried over the boost from their come-back and made quick work of the Lions with a 13-15 win. The third set was a back and forth battle seeing 5 lead changes but with Linfield holding a 5 point gap and finishing the Lions with a 3 set sweep, ending the game in a 19-25 win.
The Lions finished the night with a total of 18 kills, lead by Whitney Bickley (SO) and Krista Loughman (JR) with 4 each. Setter, Maimona Shafir (SR), controlled the offense with precise setting and finished the match with 14 assists. The Lions also experienced strong passing throughout the entire match from defensive specialists Rachel Sheldon (JR) and Hannah Gombossy (JR).
As a whole, MU played one of their most complete matches of the season. The team looks to continue their strong play as they hit the road on Thursday to take on the Wolves of Walla Walla University (Walla Walla, WA). The last time MU faced WWU the Wolves swept the Lions in 3 straight sets (13-25, 20-25, 17-25)
