Congress uses surplus to look good
Congress has more money than usual to spend on pet projects this budget year. Because House and Senate members have received more money than expected, they are fighting about where this surplus should go.
Social Security increased taxes on employee wages to avoid undue hardship when a surge of retiring Boomers want their welfare checks. Social Security will draw upon the surplus accrued during the next decade. That makes great sense.
Except the money was put into the general fund, where Congress gets its spending money, rather than into Social Security's savings.
The surplus that our government is so excited to spend is the Social Security savings account -- in other words, the welfare money our parents hope to enjoy at 65.
I have to cry foul. Congress is being irresponsible with America's money.
Republicans are using the "surplus" as a basis to cut taxes. They have a "let the people keep more money to spend on a booming economy" mind frame. But I don't buy it.
The reason for the surplus is too much Social Security money taken out of American's paychecks. I get it. Raise my taxes; I'll get mad. Then cut my taxes, and I should think you a hero. That won't get my vote. Democrats, on the other hand (along with many Republicans), have proposed all kinds of spending programs. Democrats seem to think that "we the people" should live orchestrated lives enjoying the few privileges they offer.
The surplus is new for Congress. After a decade of deficits, Congress hopes to look good for election year by providing programs -- or gifts -- for their constituents.
Congress should tell Americans that the "surplus" is their retirement money. Therefore, if Congress spends the surplus, no Social Security money will be left for Baby Boomers or anyone else. Then we can do away with the tax altogether.
Ha! Unlikely. What will happen is everyone will pay Congress' over taxation on Social Security for the next decade so Congress can look good now. When Baby Boomers hit retirement, our workforce will not only pay the established over taxation but also 10 years of Social Security deficit on top of that.
We college students and our children will pay for Congress' abuse for the rest of our lives.
The only responsible way to use the surplus is to freeze the extra money now, take that money out of the general fund and save it for its intended purpose.
As a final note, if you neglect to vote for your Congress and president, you should pay double Social Security for allowing our government to do such ridiculous spending. Apathetic voting has allowed Congress and the president to tamper with every program for its own twisted purpose.
The only good thing about overtaxation is there may be no new taxes. I'm not holding my breath.
Scott Coombe dislikes the idea of big government and globalization. Blood was shed for our freedom.
