Dr. Perkins calls for social justice
Dr. John Perkins, head of the Foundation on Reconciliation and Development, will speak in chapel on social justice and racial reconciliation on Feb. 19 and 21.
"Dr. Perkins' idea of social justice (is) that social justice can't exist outside of the gospel outside of Jesus Christ because Jesus is the only one that can put all humans in the same boat, so to speak, which is grace," junior Kindra Pickens, the event's student facilitator, said.
Students and faculty may expect some challenging statements from Dr. Perkins' messages. For example, he will most likely challenge students to take action in their communities.
"One college student said to me, 'Social justice? I've never thought of that, nor have I ever heard of the term,'" Dr. Paul Metzger, seminary professor, said. "To me, this is signifying a big vacuum in our evangelical subculture."
Students and faculty may prepare for Dr. Perkins' messages through prayer, asking God what their role in racial reconciliation may be.
"We can turn our hearts to the Scriptures. We miss portions of Scripture in terms of what some of the imperatives are, like in James," Dr. Metzger said.
"There are parts of Scripture we might pass over because they're not what we're accustomed to look for. We can search the Scriptures to find what they might say about these particular issues."
