Coffee shops abound for every personality

Touchstone Coffee House, only a five-minute walk from campus, adds color and character to Glisan street. -Daniel Stent, photo
Coffee's On
A display of cheerful flowered Mary Engelbright mugs and teapots greets customers when they step into Coffee's On near Mall 205. An oldies station plays in the background. Shortbread, candy and various teas crowd together on an espresso bar that runs along one wall of the long, narrow room.
The coffee shop serves the standard variety of mochas and lattes. The servers whip together caramel apple cider or creamy hot chocolate as well.
Drinks range between $2 to $4.
Unfortunately, Coffee's On offers only limited seating. In addition, customers have to look out on a small side street and the wall of a neighboring store.
Despite the shop's poor location, Coffee's On provides delicious drinks and a quiet atmosphere.
Shot in the Dark
The Victorian house on the corner of Hawthorne Boulevard and Southeast 32nd Place offers a new way to experience coffee.
Cup sizes included big, huge, and
mamacita, which means "hot date,"
according to the staff. Customers order their drinks through a window similar to a ticket booth.
Shot in the Dark has several board games and a study nook for reading and homework, ideal for students. But any customer who wants to spend time at the shop should bring a sweater; the rooms are chilly.
The Mexican Mocha is a delicious brew of chocolate and coffee with a twist of cinnamon. The coffee is not hot but ready for easy drinking. The staff generously supplies whipped cream for those who like a little extra to finish off their cup.
Shot in the Dark is located among the Portland hubbub at 3257 S.E. Hawthorne and is only minutes from Multnomah. Drinks range from between $2.50 to $4.50.
Touchstone Coffee House
The Touchstone Coffee House on Glisan Street is a step out of the ordinary with its pink exterior and purple and green sidewalk.
The perfume of coffee fills the small cafe, and patrons find that the
Starbucks lingo isn't universal. A hot
cappaccino is a latte here.
The cafe's carmel latte mixes just the right amount of coffee and carmel. A 16-ounce drink is $2.60.
After ordering coffee, visitors can sit and read in the small reading room or play a game in the game room. They can buy from an assortment of greeting cards or visit the community resource room.
This odd but quaint coffee shop has more to offer than its top-quality coffee and cinnamon rolls. It is a must for coffee lovers or those who simply love interesting places.
Coffee Romance
The colorful decor, plants, couches, and wooden coffee tables at Coffee Romance create a perfect atmosphere
for studying.
The coffee shop uses no paper
products, so the drinks come in tall glass mugs that appear to hold more coffee than they do.
The Mexican mocha blends cinnamon, espresso, chocolate, cream, steamed milk and nutmeg. The Kahuna is a full-bodied drink of rich cream, espresso, Ghiradelli chocolate syrup and milk.
The smooth, rich coffee has no aftertaste. The drinks come with whipped cream and chocolate flakes and range in prices from $2 to $6. You definitely get your money's worth.
The menu is unvaried. The drinks are standard with only different variations. But they taste good.
This quiet, calm shop on 79th and Southeast Powell Boulevard is a great place to relax.
