Sudents need to participate

The quality of student life is diminishing on this campus. Every student wants activities and events, but few are willing to help see them accomplished. However, if students do not step forward to participate in school activities and organizations, there will no longer be anything in which to participate on this campus.

Last season, the women's basketball team consisted of seven members. After injuries, the team dropped to six.

Throughout the season the women received little support from students; very few attended home games. After the basketball season ended, the athletic department canceled the program.

Now students have one less activity to attend -- one less for those few who actually did attend games.

Student leaders work hard to provide a community for the student body, but a lack of participation from the students nullifies all work that groups such as Stugo do.

Stugo cancelled the winter banquet because of students' lack of participation. What does student government have to try before students will support campus activities? Students cannot expect their leaders to continue planning events for the student body if they will not attend.

This year the Ambassador has no editor and only two students on staff. Students should not expect a yearbook if they are unwilling to sign up and help put one together. Low staff numbers strains the few who are on board helping.

Basketball games once drew a gym full of people, led by cheerleaders, cheering on Multnomah's teams whether they won or lost. Today, attendance is only a fraction of what it used to be -- especially if the team is losing. And spectators have no cheerleaders to lead them.

People talk a lot about community at Multnomah. If students are to live as a community, they must work together to see that the student body's needs are met.

Already students are seeing programs canceled, and they will see more if students continue to be uninvolved. Students must begin to attend events if they want community and social life on campus.
