MBC cafeteria adds new healthy options to menu
Larry Hammer said he hopes students will like the new menu items at the cafteria.
Pioneer College Caterers has changed its menu and staff this school year.
A new light and healthy menu option will appear on weekdays, alternating between lunch and dinner. Because the dining room lacks space for another serving cart, signs in existing serving areas will highlight the light and healthy choices. Pioneer added the entrees based on the information cards that students filled out, requesting a healthier choice in food.
Pioneer will cycle into the menu 11 entrees such as turkey roll-ups, baked chicken parmesan and linguine in clam sauce. Signs will note light and healthy options in the cold bar and salad bar.
The juice bar Pioneer added has resulted in student, faculty and staff consuming more juice than soda. Larry Hammer, the food services director, said he had been wishing for this change in consumption for the past five years because he cares about everyone's health. Juice is a much healthier choice than soda, which can cause digestive tract problems and contribute to the epidemic levels of diabetes in the United States.
The biggest staff change was the addition of Adrianna Bach in October 2002. As the assistant director of food services, she is in charge whenever Mr. Hammer is gone. Mrs. Bach also runs the kitchen. Mr. Hammer said she is hard working and always ready to serve.
Mr. Hammer makes changes when students seriously recommend them to him. He said he wants to be able to meet students' needs. The only way for students to bring about change is for them to make their opinions known, he said.
