Multnomah Bible College and Biblical Seminary have hired a new human resources director and a new director of recruitment.

With the retirement of Erma Wolever at the end of 2003, Steve Robinson became the new human resources director and started work Dec. 5. Gina Berquist, the former director of recruitment, is now the executive director of enrollment services, leaving her previous position open. Tim Uthmann was promoted and started as the director of recruitment Feb. 1.

As the human resources director, Mr. Robinson works with Multnomah's staff and faculty. He helps employees when communication breaks down and facilitates a good working environment.

"A lot of it is really me keeping employees informed about what is going on and how it relates to them," Mr. Robinson said. "I'm very big on communication. I want people to know what's happening and why." He also coordinates events such as the staff-faculty picnic.

Mr. Robinson graduated from Portland State University with a business degree and professional certification in human resources. He has worked in human resources for 20 years, he said. His past employers include Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, Standard Insurance and Schnitzer Steel Industries.

Mr. Robinson heard about the position from a friend of his father's who had spoken with Dr. Dan Lockwood. "I e-mailed Erma my resume, and my background happened to be what they were looking for. So I came in and filled out an application and real quick after that got an interview," he said. That occurred just before Thanksgiving. After the holiday, he met with Dr. Lockwood and Paul Griffin. He started work a couple of days later.

As the director of recruitment, Mr. Uthmann will work on team building within Multnomah's recruitment team. "Beyond that, there's going to be a lot of vision setting and strategizing how to accomplish the mission of Multnomah," Mr. Uthmann said. "It's really helping my team find the right students for Multnomah. To get those people to apply."

Mr. Uthmann graduated from Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, Wash., with an associate's degree. He graduated from Multnomah in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in speech communication.

He has worked at Multnomah for four years in a number of different positions and is taking classes for his Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Multnomah Biblical Seminary. He spent the last year-and-a-half working in the recruitment department at Multnomah.
