Make the Best of Chapel
Chapel. Some adore it, others abhor it, and still others are just plain apathetic toward it. Regardless of where a student stands, everyone has something to learn from chapel.
Everyone attends chapel enough to know exactly what it is. Chapel is not always dynamic, thrilling or meaningful. In fact, chapel is sometimes a huge drag.
What's vastly more important than chapel being fun and engaging is one's attitude toward chapel.
Simply by walking that many-stepped path that leads to chapel teaches numerous lessons: obedience, sacrifice, community.
Sadly, some students are content with trashing the opportunity to learn.
Sleeping, doing homework and nonstop whispering are all commonplace in that dreaded (by some) 10 o'clock hour. Not only are these students squandering this opportunity for themselves, but they also distract others from their enjoyment of chapel.
One does not have to love chapel, but it would be foolish not to recognize its value.
The issue reaches far beyond chapel. In everything, we Christians should look to learn. Chapel is one more opportunity to practice learning and to become more Christlike.
This requires a change in mindset. Learning can happen everywhere. It is not limited to 50 minutes in a classroom. Even when forced into a situation such as chapel, a person should respond with, "What can I learn from this?"
Required chapel attendance is something open for debate but utterly unimportant to the purpose of what is being said here. What is important is that you become a lifelong learner so that you can take something of value from any situation. Even chapel.
