Thirteen years after he first sang with Destiny, Multnomah alumnus Mark Wyatt has joined the group again. However, this time Wyatt is not only singing and playing instruments, but he is also shadowing Professor Miriam Gibby to learn how to lead the group. He will take over leadership of Destiny next year.

This semester, Wyatt is "walking a fine balance between being a member of Destiny and training for leadership," Professor Gibby said.

She said she chose Wyatt because of his extraordinary musical ability and his previous experience in Destiny.

Wyatt plays the bass guitar and sings with the group. He also sings a solo. Professor Gibby described him as a soulful singer who helps the other group members relax.

Destiny member Sarah Hadley, 18, said Wyatt is good at relating to people and working with the group members' different personalities. She said he provides support and encouragement for the members.

Wyatt is no stranger to the music department. He sang with the Ambassador Choir for two years and was a member of Destiny in 1989. He said that through these experiences he learned "how to be a servant and minister to the needs [of people]."

"[Now] I'm trying to learn the technical aspects of rehearsing the group and managing the activities once they get to the church," he said.

Wyatt's musical and vocal experiences extend beyond Multnomah, however. His father sang and played instruments in restaurants on the weekends to supplement his income. Around the age of 10, Wyatt started singing in school functions and at weddings. After joining the military, he played in the Air Force band for two years.

Wyatt, who graduated from Multnomah in 1992, is now completing a master's degree in counseling psychology at Western Seminary. He plans to teach entry-level counseling psychology classes at Multnomah after he graduates from seminary.

Mark Wyatt met his wife, Angela, at Multnomah. They and their two children live in North Portland.
