Students in Multnomah's drama class will be performing "You Can't Take It With You," which George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart wrote. The comedy is about two families from two seemingly different worlds, director Shawna Reed said.
The Sycamores are crazy and eccentric; the Kirbys are wealthy and prestigious. When the Sycamores' daughter, Alice, falls in love with the Kirbys' son, Tony, difficulty is bound to happen. At a dinner party, the two worlds collide, resulting in a situation that only Alice's Grandpa is able to help resolve.
Professor Reed said the play makes the point that "treasures here can't go with us." The entire focus is on being free to purpose our interests rather than being chained to doing one thing. Rhett Butler, who plays Mr. Kirby, said, "Though making money is nice, it's not worth sacrificing your life over because 'you can't take it with you.' "
Nineteen to 20 actors will be performing in the play. Shane Wood ("Tony"), Rachel Enyeart ("Alice") and Dustin King ("Grandpa") play the leading roles.
The performances will be in the A-Frame on the evenings of April 24-27. Tickets will go on sale the first week in April.
