MBC sophomore wins Bible scholarship second year in a row

Sophomore Daniel Fender won this year's $1,000 Lonie Friesen Tucker Bible Scholarship. Eighty students took the challenge of the written test this year, and the top eight of those students qualified for an oral exam, held during chapel Feb. 20.
Fender, a Hebrew and intercultural studies minor, won the same scholarship last year. "You'll end up good at what you spend your time doing," Fender said. He said he is unsure why he has won two years in a row because he has only been reading the Bible for four-and-a-half years, a shorter time than many students have been studying it. He doesn't have a special technique; he reads a chapter or two in the morning and two chapters before he goes to bed.
In addition to this Fender does what he calls holy loitering: He spends his free time reading the Bible and praying. Rather than going to movies or playing video games with friends, he studies the Word. And when someone mentions a verse, Fender searches for it in his Bible. Fender spent the first year-and-a-half to two years of his Christian life memorizing a verse every day. "If I had not begun hiding God's Word in my heart, I would not be who I am today," he said.
Fender scored 129 out of 150 on the written exam and 20 out of 50 on the oral for a total of 149. In second place was senior Halden Doerge, who scored 141 points and won $225. He was closely followed by Joel Roberts, 138; Brooks Doherty, 136; and Brock Dittus, 131. Other finalists included Kristi Smith, Elizabeth Morse, Annika Ryan, Daniel Ryan, Aubrie Woods and Rob Trenckmann.
