Candidates campaign for president

Justin Bodeutsch, Jelani Memory, Jocelyn Treitman

The Voice: What is or should be Stugo's role on campus?

Bodeutsch: A lot of it is planning events and making them fit students' needs. This may be a prayer meeting or Polar Jam. We plan events that help strengthen friendships and help students meet new people.

Memory: Stugo is the forefront of administrative and spiritual leadership among the student body. He or she should want to be an example and lead spiritually and administratively. There is a big difference between leading and being a positional leader-- someone thrown into a leadership position although he is not a leader.

Treitman: Stugo should fulfill what the constitution says, which is "to promote the general welfare of the student body by providing opportunities for fellowship, social activities, community involvement, missions awareness and spiritual growth within a Christ-like framework."

The Voice: What changes would you like to make?

Bodeutsch: I don't think there needs to be a lot of visible changes. We just need to do a better job of what we're already doing. Being president would give me an opportunity to use my experience. I've seen over the past few years of being on Stugo what has worked and what hasn't. The Stugo president doesn't plan every event. My job is more pooling together different ideas in a tangible way.

Memory: Stugo should have a greater influence spiritually. Stugo should have an investment in people rather than in a position or events. I would like to change how the RAs work together with Stugo, to change how segregated it is. I want to make the student body more united. We would all work for the same purpose--to love God more.

Treitman: I can't necessarily say there are changes or policies I want to change. I desire to work within the structure already provided to deepen the communication and relationships among the student leadership.

The Voice: What would you like to accomplish as president?

Bodeutsch: I hope to bring the whole Stugo team together, to get us to work together. Every year there are problems. I want the new team to look at the past mistakes and learn. I'm currently putting a book together that describes each Stugo position. At the end of next year, I would like to amend the constitution. Every member would have to write a report of their year and train the next person taking their position.

Memory: I want our people, this campus, to turn into a repenting, loving and worshipful campus. We can add in all our events and all our stuff, but that's not what's most important. God has not called me to be president. He has called me to lead.

Treitman: I would like to accomplish the task that the Lord has laid on my heart which is to challenge the student body to love and encourage one another so that we not only become united as the body, we also fall deeper in love with Jesus by loving others.

The Voice: What is the biggest issue on campus that Stugo faces?

Bodeutsch: Student apathy. Stugo plans events that are really good, but convincing people to come is another matter. I want to be working more with the RAs coordinating events, giving advice and scheduling around their event. I want to let RAs in on planning events to help overcome student apathy.

Memory: Spiritual complacency. In the small stuff, like how we use the Lord's name, treat chapels and the intent behind our language. Love is not supposed to be passive, but active. Change takes a vision, usually created by one, which spreads to a small group, than to a larger group. My job is to cast vision, to inspire people.

Treitman: The majority of students aren't excited about the events that Stugo puts together to facilitate opportunities for fellowship, social activities, community involvement and missions awareness.

The Voice: Why should students vote for you?

Bodeutsch: I have a lot of Stugo and campus experience. I have held five positions on Stugo: sophomore representative, junior representative, MCO implementarian, MCO vice chair, and I'm parliamentarian. I have lived in Aldrich, White and off-campus housing. I think I could lead Stugo well.

Memory: I don't know if they should. I think they should pray about it. I am a leader, and I have a vision for this school. God has blessed me to be a leader among leaders. I've always been in a leadership position. I've led the improv team, Young Life in high school and am Stugo's spiritual life coordinator.

Treitman: To be honest, people should only vote for me after they've prayerfully sought the Lord as to whom he desires to work through on our campus next year. I can tell you the Lord has burdened my heart for us to grow in love for each other so we may work together to accomplish the task that he has laid before us. I believe this will deepen our love of and for God while we glorify him with our actions.
