On April 23, Rock the Square will give Multnomah Bible College its third grand entrance into downtown Portland. Pioneer Courthouse Square will host the third annual concert put on by Multnomah Community Outreach, showcasing local and Multnomah bands.
Since 2003, MCO has used this free concert as another way of going into the heart of downtown Portland. Justin Bodeutsch, organizing Rock the Square for the second year now, said, "We're going into the cultural center in a way that is fun and appropriate. We break a lot of negative stereotypes about Christians."
The concert will include MBC students and alumni such as Devin Chapman, John Ross, Odon Soterias and Andy Tucker in Quaker Gun. Tucker said, "We play a sort of pop-indie rock, but we're just looking foward to some fun rock 'n' roll." Bodeutsch said, "It's a wide mix of tastes, but it gives people a chance to hear the variety we enjoy."
Bodeutsch has secured Hyperstatic Union as a headliner for the show. The band played two years ago and is touring with Third Day. Rock and Roll Worship Circus also contacted Bodeutsch to play at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Originally from Longview, Wash., they toured in 2004 with Delirious? in England.
The student government is giving Bodeutsch its $2,000 budget for student concerts. Last year, the concert cost $4,000. Bodeutsch hopes to keep the costs to $3,000 this year. Renting just one corner of Pioneer Courthouse Square costs $1,600. Additional expenses include renting a sound system and paying the bands.
