No longer will students have to go hungry....

We Thank You, Solid Rock

Under the fluorescent lights of MBC's glorified 7 Eleven, students can now use their meal cards. At first, students were unimpressed by this new convenience. So what if the cooks offer a peanut butter and banana sandwich in the Solid Rock Cafe instead of the cafeteria? They're still slimy.

But soon the implications became clear. The cafe is open all day and not limited to sporadic, one-and-a-half-hour increments like the cafeteria. Now students can grab breakfast anytime of the morning on the way to class, rather than be forced into the cafeteria by 9 a.m. for breakfast.

Never again do students need to have class or work to be eligible for a to-go box. Just grab a pre-packaged lunch from the cafe. No longer will students have to go hungry when they arrive at dinner five minutes after the cafeteria has closed. The cafe offers dinner until 10 p.m. during the weekdays.

The cafe should also serve those pre-packaged meals on the weekends. This, of course, is when the cafeteria food is generally less appealing than normal, and students are more apt to miss meals because they're late getting back from weekend adventures.

Students miss the days when they could use their pre-paid meal plan to buy dinner for a guest, for a friend who forgot his ID card or for the general mooch.

Still, in spite of student longings for the sweet meal plans of the old days, the new options offer much to be thankful for. The ready-to-go meals are well-presented and edible; they offer a break from the food served in the cafeteria. And best of all, the convenient meals are less stringent in regard to fluctuating student schedules.

Thanks to the food service for not just taking something away but giving something new in return.
