Dr. Lockwood Plans Sabbatical for Fall Semester

Dr. Lockwood has served as Mult-nomah's president for seven years.

Multnomah's president, Dr. Daniel Lockwood, will be on sabbatical from August 1, 2004, to December 31, 2004.

Dr. Lockwood will spend his five-month sabbatical researching, writing and relaxing. His sabbatical will not be typical in that he will not be traveling to do research. "I think a lot of it is just really an opportunity to reflect and to plan for the future of the school," Dr. Lockwood said.

He will be adding to and creating visuals for two book manuscripts. The first book, "Profiles of Faith," is about Hebrews 11. The other book discusses the fruit of the Spirit and stems from his chapel messages last year on the subject. "I've got a lot of the research and even a draft of some of the text but need some time to work on visuals and the text," Dr. Lockwood said.

He plans to stay in the Portland area, although he may spend some time at the Oregon Coast resting. "Having time for study and reflection is important," Dr. Lockwood said.

Because his duties have become directed toward representing the school in financial arenas, he needs more formal training in that area. He plans to travel to the University of Indiana to take a class on fund-raising and philanthropy.

Although he will spend most of his time away from Multnomah, Dr. Lockwood will represent the school on a few occasions during his sabbatical. In September, he will give his annual report at Multnomah's board meeting, and he will be leading a tour in Europe covering the Protestant Reformation in October.

The president's council, including Dr. Wayne Strickland and Multnomah's other vice presidents, will tend to Dr. Lockwood's duties while he is away. Although the president's council will make decisions as a team, Dr. Strickland will act as head of that team. "I don't view myself as the interim president," Dr. Strickland said, "but I will be there to facilitate the president's council meetings in Dr. Lockwood's absence."

Dr. Lockwood said Dr. Strickland "will also fulfill the symbolic role of the president." This will include planning family chapels, speaking at events for Multnomah and representing Dr. Lockwood at a regional accreditation site visit in October. He will not teach any classes during fall or spring semester next year.

For family chapels, Dr. Strickland does not plan on speaking every week, but thinks he will bring in various speakers.

Dr. Lockwood said Multnomah is approaching a transition time as the school undertakes regional accreditation. Since he needs to be on a campus during various points of the accreditation process, the executive committee decided that a fall sabbatical would be the best time for him to be away.

The executive committee of Multnomah's board of trustees offered Dr. Lockwood the opportunity to take a sabbatical. During a time of evaluation, the board members asked Dr. Lockwood what ways they could help him do his job better. "One of the things that came up was that I've been at Multnomah 24 years, have been president for 7 years and have never had a sabbatical," Dr. Lockwood said. "I was discovering that with my responsibilities, I was having trouble thinking strategically."
