IT Makes MBC High-tech

Multnomah has finally merged onto the information superhighway, thanks to the help of a hardworking IT department.

No longer are students limited to the computer labs for instant Internet access. Now they can whip out their laptops and log on in nearly every building on campus, even though this leads some students down the path of temptation Ð Internet surfing during long lectures.

Students can use spare change for laundry rather than chucking it into a small metal box to print papers, thanks to a new high-speed printer in the JCA. Having already paid the price in their tuition, students can print papers for free.

Students, faculty and staff with multnomah.edu e-mail addresses no longer have to hassle with system crashes. Now their electronic letters are managed almost worry free.

The clunky old bear-trap keyboards are gone. Typing on the soft new black keyboards is like dipping your hands in a vat of honey.

Journalism students who once cringed at a computer freeze during deadline now have an entirely new, upgraded lab in the Journalism House that makes for more efficient publication production.

And just in case you missed that last Friesen Fortnightly, no worries! You can access it on Multnomah's new blogosphere Ð a launchpad into the life and thought of MBC faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Sure, there will always be bugs to work out, but the IT department has plans in place to continue upgrading the campus.

One plan is to expand the wireless Internet connection capabilities to the dorms and married student housing. They are also working on an automatic e-mail forwarding system so students will receive campus e-mails whether they use Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail or Multnomah.

Three cheers to IT as they drive our school into the fast lane of technology.
