MBC president runs relay
Dr. Daniel Lockwood, president of Multnomah Bible College and Seminary, completed his fifth Hood to Coast relay Aug, 23. This year 11 of his family and friends joined him to form the Ranch Branches team, named after property Dr. Lockwood's parents owned.
Each team member completed three of 36 six-mile legs of the race. A van held the rest of the team, some sleeping, while they waited their turn to run. "There is nothing quite like it in terms of teamwork," Dr. Lockwood said.
The Hood to Coast relay started at Timberline Lodge, 6,000 feet above sea level, and ended in Seaside, Ore., at sea level. One thousand teams, all with 12 member each, entered the 197-mile race. The elite teams finished the race in 17 hours, while the average teams finished in 25-28 hours.
The Ranch Branches finished the race in just over 29 hours.
On the eighth leg of the race, the Ranch Branches saw a man collapse from heart failure. Dr. Lockwood's brother, Daryl, a physician, performed CPR until the ambulance arrived. The Ranch Branches later heard the man was in stable condition.
Dr. Lockwood's favorite moment of the race was during the night run across the Sellwood Bridge. He enjoyed the peacefulness of running alone at night, carrying a flashlight and wearing reflective gear. Under the glow of the moon, Dr. Lockwood said the food and free massage tents along the route looked like little villages.
Dr. Lockwood and his daughter, Elise, started training for the race back in March. Dr. Lockwood, who also enjoys mountain climbing and martial arts, said he runs the race for fitness and fun.
