Groundbreaking for new men's dorm.

The post office will soon be torn down in preparation for the new dorm.

Construction on the new men's dorm will begin this fall according to Paul Griffin, vice president of finance. The groundbreaking ceremony for the dorm is slated for Oct. 10, 1998, during Multnomah's homecoming festivities. The projected date of completion is August 1999. "We would like to have [the dorm] available for occupancy by fall 1999," Mr. Griffin said.

The new men's dorm will be built on the land between Memorial Dorm and White Hall where the student post office now stands. Mr. Griffin said the post office will relocate to an office that is already being constructed in the Student Commons building. Eventually, the campus post office will deliver the mail directly to the dorms.

The new men's dorm will house 120 students, 16 more than White Hall. The dorm will be a two-building structure connected by a covered walkway. Each two-story building will contain apartments clustered around a lounge. Eight students will share each apartment, which contains bedrooms, study areas, and a full kitchen. The central lounge will be a two-story atrium complete with skylights.

Griffin said Multnomah will continue to house students in White Hall, but major renovations are planned. They will cut the occupancy in half by adding doorways, making two rooms into one.

Lloyd Helm, head of campus services, said equiptment will block the parking lot north of White Hall while the dorm is under construction. Although the college is seeking a location for further parking, Helm said students will have to start utilizing the parking area behind the soccer field and the gymnasium.

The board of trustees approved plans for the dorm during the '96-'97 school year. Multnomah sold houses on Pacific Street to fund the dorm.
