MBC receives candidacy
Multnomah Bible College has posted a message for all educational institutions to notice: The college is a quality institution.
On June 15, the commissioners of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NASC) approved Multnomah Bible College for candidacy status. By taking this step, the accrediting association has committed to helping Multnomah get initial accreditation.
"Now we have a foot in the door and [the commissioners of NASC] are going to help us however they can," Dr. Wayne Strickland, college academic dean, said.
As a candidate for regional accreditation, Multnomah has certain rights. It qualifies for all federal financial aid programs. The school already enjoys this right through accreditation with the Association of Bible Colleges.
The NASC directory now includes Multnomah. As a result, institutions may now accept Multnomah's credits whereas they might not have before. This is not a guarantee because institutions are not obligated to accept the credits of any other institution.
However, the state of California has already responded positively. Two Multnomah alumni received their teacher credentials in California as a result of Multnomah's candidacy status.
MBC's next step will be to achieve initial regional accreditation. This means that Multnomah must submit a second self-study. The commissioners of NASC will again visit the campus. This process may take four or five years.
For the moment, however, the faculty, staff and students of Multnomah can celebrate and reap the benefits of a significant step toward regional accreditation.
