Dr. Daniel Scalberg's new book, "The Kregel Pictorial Guide to Christian Heritage in England" will arrive in bookstores this fall. More than two decades of summer trips and tours that Dr. Scalberg led in England provide the basis for the book.
The book "tries to create a history of English Christianity, which is like a stroll through its past as a tour group strolls through the ancient ecclesiastical sites of the country," he said.
Multnomah's bookstore will stock the book as well as other Christian and Catholic bookstores around the United States.
Dr. Scalberg originally wanted to write about France using a similar angle. But Kregel felt that England with its stronger ties to North America would sell better. Dr. Scalberg didn't choose the book title; Kregel used its name on the cover.
Dr. Scalberg divided the book into three main sections. The first section overviews the entire sweep of English
church history chronologically. The
second pictorially displays the geographic centers of the church in England. The third section contains biographical sketches of the significant figures in the history of Christianity in England.
He wants the readers to develop a love for English church history. Dr. Scalberg will use his new book in his "History of Christianity" course.
The book took him three-and-a-half years to write. He said, "I see it selling well as a giftbook initially. Here is a nice book for your Christian friend who happens to be interested in church history. Not everyone is, but for the Christian who [likes history], it would make a very nice gift."
Dr. Scalberg plans to write more books in the future. He will start a 12-month sabbatical this January. He plans to write the bulk of a book on the history of Christianity in France.
