The women's volleyball team is striving for success, but the women will emphasize maintaining a Christ-like image on court.

Coach Debbie Speer said she is looking forward to this volleyball season because with new height and talent, this could be one of the finest years for the team in a long time.

Only four players have returned. But most of the women are not new to the game, however. The team's experience encouraged Coach Speer.

Many of the players come straight from high school and bring a competitive spirit with them. But Coach Speer doesn't want competition to be the main goal of the season.

She said, "My desire for the team is to play well but also to portray a Christ-like attitude." She said she believes maintaining a close relationship with players helps this happen.

Following every game, win or lose, the team sings a song of worship to the crowd. Coach Speer hopes to show her team is focused on revealing an image pleasing to Christ despite the game's outcome.

Reflecting on last year's record of 8-9, Coach Speer feels optimistic about the outcome of this season. She said this season's 2-3 start indicates the team's ability to play.

Coach Speer coached at Damascus high school for seven years and began coaching at Multnomah two years ago. She finds she better relates to MBC women because of their higher maturity level. She attributes her coaching success to enjoyable years of playing volleyball herself.

Co-captains Aimee Calenberg and Kelsie Thimsen lead the 2001 team.

The team has a large freshman presence: Rachel Eaton, Tamarack Lammon and Kelsie Thimsen.

Returning players are Aimee Calenberg, Callie Fahsholz, Kelly Bryant and Krysten Weed, who played two years ago.

The three other new players are sophomore Caroline De Los Reyes and juniors Erin Johnson and Bri Knuckey.
